Giving Thanks 1

I woke up this morning with gratitude.  I have much to give thanks for in my life. I live in a beautiful national forest, have an amazing family (two and four legged!), I’m healthy and I have two fabulous countries I call home.

And, then my thoughts turned gratitude for all that is K9 MEDIC…

To the Dogs…

Yes, it does begin with them for me. There would be no K9 MEDIC without all the K9s around the world I love so dearly.  Thank you for your deep loyalty, thank you for your outstanding skills, thank you for that crazy energy, thank you for  your defiant courage, and thank you for teaching me to value every moment.

To the Handlers…

Thank you for being there for them. Sometimes, I wish I could stand beside every Working Dog on the planet, every moment of every day to take care of them.  But then I realize that it’s much better that you are there for them.  It’s you they love and work for. It’s you who can read every aspect of your dog. It’s you who train so tirelessly in all aspects of your job. So to the Handlers… thanks for standing by them with all that you are and do.

To the Medics…

Thank you for saving lives… all of them.  Thank you for recognizing and honoring that some patients have 4 legs. Thank you for your unending quest to learn more and be better and for transferring those skills to our working dogs. Thank you for making it possible for these dogs to live and work another day.

To the Policy and Decision Makers…

Thank you for being the unsung heros who enable all of this to happen. Most people don’t know you exist, or give you a hard time if they do. “Office” meetings don’t tend to make for dramatic silhouette photos and so you tend to be forgotten. K9 MEDIC is working to change that, and in the meantime, know that you are appreciated… because without you, none of us would be allowed to do what we do.

To the K9 MEDIC Team…

I’m usually pretty good with words, but I’m not sure what I can say to express my gratitude to the team that has grown together for the past ten years and dramatically developed and expanded in the last 12 months. I’m so proud of the dozens of advisors, instructors (two and four legged), partners and office team members across the country, and around the world. I am constantly amazed by how much of yourself you are willing to give to the cause. Thank you for skills, thank you for your time, and most of all thank you for believing in this epic vision that we CAN and WILL ensure that EVERY Working K9 has access to leading edge medical care equal to the best human trauma field care. Because of you… we ARE making it happen… for Dog’s Sake!

About the Dog:

We often features pictures of dogs and we figure you might like to know a little more of their story. This is K9 Shadow. He trained with several teams and trainers in Canada and in the US until he retired to became a full-time member of the K9 MEDIC Teaching Krew.  Since then he has travelled all over North America teaching hundreds of students in his career and literally had his own Frequent Flier Card with Delta Airlines. Not bad for a dog that was rescued from a home that left him in the basement for days with no place to potty and had never been off-leash when he was rescued at over 1 year old.  It was beautiful to watch him run for the first time and discover he could fly. He is a soul that knows that anything is possible even when everything around you looks like it’s going to $h!t.  K9 Shadow passed away several months ago. He was my first dog and one that taught me a great deal about gratitude, so it seemed like a good time to feature him.  Thank you Shadow, for being you.
